The 1992, Construction Fence Mural was McGee's first commission by a major ar t institution and the beginning of an impor tant ongoing relationship between ar tist and Yerba Buena Center for the Ar ts. Consisting of 8 panels, each of 4 feet x 8 feet, the mural reflects the ar tist's connection to urban street life and pays tribute to the beauty, pathos, humor, and sensory overload of inner-city life. Red acrylic paint, inspired by the red doors in Chinatown, serves as background on all the panels. The imagery spray in graffiti style with white paint bleeding down the panels, uses a stylized car toon vocabulary that references Soviet constructivism to create caricatures that address man's struggle towards economic and social freedom.
